AFTER ALL WHAT IS BEER?
Beer very briefly and directly is a carbonated compound of water, malt, hops and yeast, which united in the right way and mainly with the right techniques form this orange colored liquid that we so appreciate.
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF EACH BEER COMPOUND?
- Malt: It is a dry twinned barley, which in the process causes the result to be somewhat sweet, it is also at this time when the malt sugar turns into alcohol, this whole process is well known as fermentation. The malt grain can be roasted or not, this will depend on the type of beer and the process used. There are two types of malt, the clear one that has a taste similar to bread and nuts, and the dark malt that tastes similar to coffee, toasted ingredients and even chocolate.
- Hops: It is a flower bud that acts as a preservative and brings the taste of bitterness, floral and herbal tones to beer.
- Yeast: It is the main agent for the fermentation of beer. There are several types of fermentation, but all of these deeper processes will be detailed in another post.
BEER FAMILIES:
There are 3 best-known beer families, Lager, Ale and Lambic:
- Lager: This type is the best known and is easily found in supermarkets and bars. Its fermentation takes place at low temperatures and the flavor is given more by hops and malt. Usually Lager beer is light, but it is possible to find some types that are dark but all have simpler and popular flavors. Within the Larger family we have the Pilsen, American Lager and Malzbier beers. Larger is a type of beer widely used in Germany.
- Ale: Unlike Lager, Ale beers are fermented at higher temperatures, so they are more full-bodied and creamy. The flavor is a set formed by all the beer compounds that we have already mentioned together with other ingredients such as fruits and spices that flavor Ale beers. For all these factors its flavor is more complex. Within the Ale family we have Ipa beers, all wheat beers, Altbier and Poter.
- Lambic: This beer is not easy to find on the market because it is produced on a smaller scale, its fermentation is done by a natural process where nothing is done to speed up the fermentation process which is all done in open barrels. The taste of Lambic beers tends to be sour, pulling towards bitter tones. Within the Lambic family we have the Geuze, Faro Lambic and Liefmans beers.
